Mangano & Gonsalves Partner With Community College To Save Volunteer Firefighters Recruitment And Retention Scholarship
Nassau County Executive Edward P. Mangano was joined by Legislative Presiding Officer Norma Gonsalves; Nassau County Legislators Dennis Dunne, Rose Walker and Michael Venditto; Acting President of Nassau Community College (NCC) Dr. Kenneth Saunders; and Nassau County Fire Marshal Scott Tusa as they announced funding to save the Volunteer Firefighter Recruitment and Retention Scholarship Program that provides volunteers with free community college tuition. The scholarship was placed in jeopardy as Federal Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) Grant funds are no longer available for the program. Working together they have come to a resolution through which current and future students who have been eligible to have their tuition to Nassau Community College (NCC) reimbursed through the SAFER Grant will continue to have their tuition reimbursed for the 2013-2014 academic year through a NCC Scholarship.

Mangano and Legislative Presiding Officer Norma Gonsalves invite residents to a free Drug Overdose Prevention Seminar that teaches non-medically trained residents how to save a live by administering an antidote – Naloxone or Narcan - which reverses the effects of a fatal overdose of prescription drugs or heroin. Residents, age 18+, who attend the 90 minute forum, will obtain a free life-saving Narcan kit provided by the New York State Health Department. Narcan reverses the potentially deadly effects of Heroin and prescription painkillers, such as Oxycontin and Vicodin, on the body’s respiratory system.

Mangano Opens Centers For Superstorm Sandy Victims To Complete Pre-Registration Process
Nassau County Executive Edward P. Mangano today announced the implementation of three New York State programs, administered by Nassau County, to assist homeowners and business owners that were impacted by Superstorm Sandy. The implementation of these programs is moving forward with the understanding that funds, although approved by the United States Congress, are still not yet available and details of the programs are still being developed and may change before a final version of the programs are released.

Mangano Attracts Film And Television Industry Leaders To Nassau County
In an effort to further attract the motion picture and television industry to Nassau, County Executive Edward P. Mangano today met with 15 of the industry’s location managers, film and commercial producers, directors and casting directors to begin a two-day tour of Nassau’s hottest filming spots. The former United States Navy-Grumman Corporation property in Bethpage is now the home of two successful production studios that encompass three buildings and nine sound stages. In 2012, Nassau County hosted over 650 production days – more days than Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island and the Bronx. It is estimated that the film industry provided $90 million in economic impact for Nassau County in 2012.

Mangano Applauds Kids Helping Kids For Assisting Hempstead Residents
Nassau County Executive Edward P. Mangano applauded the efforts of Kids Helping Kids by Kids Way Inc. for once again coming to the aid of residents in need after a tragic fire roared through a Hempstead apartment building and took the lives of two people and displaced many more from their homes and belongings. The fire took place towards the end of the 2013 blizzard on February 9th at 6:00 a.m. - forcing hundreds of residents from adjoining buildings in to the bitter cold. Many evacuees, some still in pajamas and wrapped in blankets, stood in the cold with more than 70 residents taking shelter at a recreation center at Kennedy Park.

Mangano: Office Of Investigations Uncovers 17 New Welfare Fraud,Waste & Abuse Cases

Mangano today activated Nassau’s Warm Bed homeless program which providing shelter relief to individuals and families during cold winter months. Mangano, Cuomo Announce FEMA Emergency Assistance for Homeowners
Nassau County Executive Edward P. Mangano and Governor Andrew M. Cuomo today announced that FEMA will issue Emergency Assistance for New Yorkers whose homes were affected by Hurricane Sandy. At the Governor’s request, FEMA will bring in contractors in order to perform basic repairs so that residents can return to their homes while more long term repairs are in progress. Only residents in the federally-declared counties are eligible to participate in this program. Homeowners in these localities who want to apply for assistance should contact their county or local officials to receive contractor support. For the third year in a row, Nassau County Executive Edward P. Mangano delivered to the Legislature a No-Property Tax Increase Budget that reduces spending for a second consecutive year and continues to deliver essential services for the people of Nassau. Mangano Prescription Drug Education, Awareness And Enforcement Efforts Advance
Continuing his efforts to prevent prescription drug abuse and save lives, County Executive Edward P. Mangano today announced that Nassau is the first county in the state to have been granted certification from the New York State Department of Health to administer a Drug Overdose Prevention Program. The state certification enables the County to train its employees as well as the families of at-risk individuals in administering an overdose reversal agent, known as Narcan or naloxone, to anyone who has ingested large amounts of opioids and who is in a life-threatening situation. Opioids include prescription painkillers such as oxycodone and street drugs like heroin.

Mangano: Auto Auctions Net Nearly A Half Million Dollars For Taxpayers
Nassau County Executive Edward P. Mangano’s initiative to sell off excess inventory rather than repair it has proved to be a successful recovery method for taxpayers. The recent auction of 15 County-owned Orion Buses, formerly part of the Long Island Bus fleet, pushed the total proceeds from the sale of surplus county vehicles to $400,475. The buses, which were owned by the County but used by the MTA when it ran Long Island Bus, have reached the end of their useful life. They were purchased by a handful of bidders, most of whom will use them for scrap.

Mangano To Host July Birthday Celebration For Senior Citizens To Obtain Government Services
Nassau County Executive Edward P. Mangano will host a Senior Citizen Birthday Celebration on Tuesday, July 24th for residents with July birthdays that are ages 65 and older. The event, sponsored by JJT Energy & Elder Law Attorney Stephen J. Silverberg, will provide senior citizens with access to government services provided by the Nassau County Offices of Aging, Consumer Affairs, Assessment, Health and Human Services, Housing, Social Services and Veterans Services. JJT Energy representatives will also be available to offer cost saving tips on energy bills. Elder Law Attorney Stephen J. Silverberg will also be available to offer services. Mangano Releases $45 Million Deficit Reduction Plan
Nassau County Executive Edward P. Mangano today furthered his commitment to protecting overburdened taxpayers by releasing a Deficit Reduction Plan that cuts the size of government while not raising property taxes. County Executive Mangano closed the County’s $310 million budget deficit to just $45 million as projected by Comptroller George Maragos earlier this month. The Deficit Reduction Plan eliminates the projected deficit and keeps Nassau on the road to recovery.

Mangano: Cooling Centers To Open In Nassau County
In an effort to help Nassau County residents cope with high temperatures and humidity, Nassau County Executive Edward P. Mangano today announced that cooling centers will be open Today, July 18th, in collaboration with the Village of Rockville Centre, Town of Oyster Bay, Town of North Hempstead and the Salvation Army. The National Weather Service has issued a Heat Advisory for Nassau County, with temperatures expected to hit mid to high 90’s with a heat index of 100 to 104 Degrees.

Mangano Announces $622,680 For Summer Youth Employment In Hempstead & Oyster Bay
County Executive Edward P. Mangano announced today that Nassau has successfully obtained increased funding for Summer Employment Programs from the New York State Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance (OTDA). This year’s allocation of $622,680 exceeds the 2011 allocation of $467,060 - an increase of more than 30%. Nassau Approves Criminal Penalties For Sale Of Synthetic Marijuana
The Nassau County Legislature today approved County Executive Edward P. Mangano’s measure to criminally penalize individuals or companies who sell products containing one or more synthetic cannabinoids, including brand names known as Spice and K2 which are known to mimic the high associated with marijuana. BigBelly solar compactors are a patented, compacting trash receptacle, self-powered by solar energy and are software-controlled. In an effort to reduce collection costs and address overflow issues, these next generation trash receptacles use web-based, wireless data technology to transmit alerts to maintenance supervisors that the units are nearing capacity. Mangano Welcomes Clarkin Family Of Mineola To New Habitat For Humanity Home
Nassau County Executive Edward P. Mangano today welcomed the Clarkin family,made up of twelve siblings, seven of whom are developmentally disabled adults, totheir brand-new home in Mineola, made possible through a public-private partnership between Nassau County, Habitat for Humanity of Nassau County (HFHNC), and the Disability Opportunity Fund (DOF). When the Clarkin parents passed away, the siblings took over the home which in time fell into a state of disrepair and was declared uninhabitable by the State of New York. Habitat for Humanity of Nassau County took over the repairs on the house and began construction in May 2011, thanks to $175,000 in Federal funds from the County’s HOME Investment Partnership Program, and a $150,000 line of credit and help with appliance and material purchases from the DOF, along with volunteers from throughout Nassau County.

Nassau County Executive Edward P. Mangano and Police Commissioner Thomas Dale received support from local taxpayer reform groups that are looking for real reform and change in Nassau that protects its already overburdened residents from another tax hike. Mangano And Weisenberg Join Winners Of Nassau Library System's "Reading With The Monsters" Program At Peninsula Public Library
Nassau County Executive Edward P. Mangano and New York State Assemblyman Harvey Weisenberg joined Monster Truck Driver Greg Winchenbach and children from the Peninsula Public Library to celebrate after reading over 4,000 books collectively as part of the “Reading with Monsters” Program. The Nassau Library System and Monster Jam partnered to promote reading amongst children between the ages of 4 and 12 from November 9, 2011 – January 16, 2012. A 5-week reading program was offered through 54 libraries within the Nassau Library System. The children were invited to participate in the program by reading books off a suggested pre-determined reading list. Six different levels were set and each time a child achieved a level, he or she received a Monster Jam themed prize. The library with the most participants was awarded the Grand Prize of a real Monster Truck and driver visit.
