Long Island Bus

Buses in Nassau County operate as Long Island Bus under a lease-operating agreement between Nassau County and the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA).

   •    LI Bus' network links communities via 59 routes in Nassau County, western Queens and eastern Suffolk County.
   •    In 2008, LI Bus served an average of 110,000 passengers each weekday.  
   •    LI Bus Fleet includes over 300 fixed route buses and more than 80 para-transit vehicles.

  • MetroCard is the light, plastic card that allows you to pay your fare electronically on all LI Bus routes and New York City Transit buses and subways. You can choose between several kinds of MetroCard to pay your LI Bus fare -- Unlimited Rides (1-Day Fun Pass, 7-Day, 14-Day, 30-Day) and Pay-Per-Ride.
  • Once you use an Unlimited Ride MetroCard, you cannot use it again for 18 minutes except on approved connecting LI Bus and NYC Transit routes.
  • Reduced-Fare MetroCards are available with application at half-price to senior citizens (over 60 for LI Bus; 65 for NYC Transit) and persons with qualifying disabilities. For further information and an application, call (718) 243-4999.
  • Senior citizens age 60 or over and Medicare card holders pay half-fare at all times upon presentation of proper identification. A Reduced - Fare MetroCard is available to senior citizens and individuals with qualifying disabilities. For further information, call (718) 243-4999.
  • Children under 44" tall ride free when accompanied by an adult. There is a limit of three children per adult.
  • Students through grade 12 receive reduced fares with an LI Bus identification pass supplied through participating schools.

Where To Buy MetroCard

  • Unlimited Ride and Pay-Per-Ride MetroCards may be purchased at LI Bus’ Hempstead Transit Center, any subway station, the MetroCard Express Van and more than 3,300 neighborhood stores. The Fun Pass is available at many neighborhood stores and the MetroCard Express Van. For more MetroCard information, including a complete list of the sales locations near you, please call (800) METROCARD (outside New York City) or (212) METROCARD (within New York City). MetroCard Customer Service agents are available from 7 am to 11 pm on weekdays and 9 am to 5 PM on weekends. For additional information, Click here.
  • Mail & Ride enables commuters to receive their Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) Monthly ticket at home with a MetroCard on the reverse side of their ticket. For more information, call the LIRR at (800) 649-NYNY (6969).
  • Web Ticket allows commuters to order tickets online and save 5% on One-Way, Round Trip, Ten Trip and Weekly tickets or 2% on Monthly tickets. Tickets are mailed in 3 to 5 business days. For more information, call the LIRR at (800) 649-NYNY (6969).

Long Island Rail Road

The Long Island Rail Road is a subsidiary or New York State's Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA).

Fact File:

   •    The LIRR is the busiest commuter railroad in North America, carrying an average of 301,000 customers each weekday on 735 trains.
   •    Chartered on April 24, 1834, it is also the oldest railroad still operating under its original name, and in 2009 the LIRR is celebrating its 175 anniversary.
   •    The LIRR is comprised of over 700 miles of track serving 124 stations - 58 in Nassau County.
