Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano announces that Nickerson Beach Park — the only County-run park located on the Atlantic Ocean — will open for the summer season Memorial Day weekend, Saturday, May 28.
Nickerson Beach will remain open seven days a week from sunrise to sunset over the summer.
A 121-acre park, Nickerson is located on Lido Boulevard in the village of Lido Beach. The park offers a beautiful three-quarter-mile-long shoreline and large beach as well as numerous attractions. These include the “Fun Zone,” a seamless family-focused recreational site that incorporates a skate park, colorful basketball courts with fiberglass backboards, and a state-of-the-art playground with special attractions such as climbing apparatus and puzzles.
In addition, there is a new nautical-themed playground by the West Cabana area that incorporates slides, climbing apparatus and a ship with various interactive features. The park also features swimming pools, beach volleyball courts, picnic areas, cabanas, a campground, pools, athletic fields, a dog run, and a concession.
Nickerson Beach is also one of the four parks taking part in the County’s Summer Recreation Program, which begins July 5 and runs for six weeks. The program, for children ages five to 12, offers two sessions: either 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. or 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
This year, the program has added swimming to a menu of activities that includes arts and crafts, board and recreational games, a range of athletic programs, and special programs. Fees range from $600 for one child for the shorter session to $750 for the full-day session, with discounts available for both sessions for additional children from the same family. The registration deadline is June 11.
During the summer season, daily parking fees at Nickerson are $8 for Leisure Pass holders and $30 for non-Leisure Pass holders; seasonal passes are also available.
