- Mangano Announces $622,680 For Summer Youth Employment In Hempstead & Oyster Bay County Executive Edward P. Mangano announced today that Nassau has successfully obtained increased funding for Summer Employment Programs from the New York State Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance (OTDA). This year’s allocation of $622,680 exceeds the 2011 allocation of $467,060 - an increase of more than 30%. County Executive Mangano noted that the Town of Hempstead will be awarded $467,060 and the Town of Oyster Bay awarded $145,620 to implement employment programs for participating youth.

- Nassau Approves Criminal Penalties For Sale Of Synthetic Marijuana The Nassau County Legislature today approved County Executive Edward P. Mangano’s measure to criminally penalize individuals or companies who sell products containing one or more synthetic cannabinoids, including brand names known as Spice and K2 which are known to mimic the high associated with marijuana. The new law makes sale of these products a criminal offense punishable by a fine of up to $1,000 and/or up to one year’s imprisonment for violators.

BigBelly solar compactors are a patented, compacting trash receptacle, self-powered by solar energy and are software-controlled. In an effort to reduce collection costs and address overflow issues, these next generation trash receptacles use web-based, wireless data technology to transmit alerts to maintenance supervisors that the units are nearing capacity. These solar waste and recycling stations are compactors as well as garbage receptacles, as they hold five times as much garbage as conventional trash can.

Mangano today welcomed the Clarkin family,made up of twelve siblings, seven of whom are developmentally disabled adults, totheir brand-new home in Mineola, made possible through a public-private partnership between Nassau County, Habitat for Humanity of Nassau County (HFHNC), and the Disability Opportunity Fund (DOF). When the Clarkin parents passed away, the siblings took over the home which in time fell into a state of disrepair and was declared uninhabitable by the State of New York. - Taxpayer Reform Groups Overwhelmingly Support Mangano's Community Policing Plan (COP) For Nassau County Nassau County Executive Edward P. Mangano and Police Commissioner Thomas Dale received support from local taxpayer reform groups that are looking for real reform and change in Nassau that protects its already overburdened residents from another tax hike. Last week, Mangano and Dale submitted to the County Legislature a COmmunity Policing Plan (COP) that reassigns 48 police officers from desk jobs to Problem Oriented Police (POP)/Special Patrol positions and transforms four current precincts into new Community Policing Centers to be located throughout the County. The plan eliminates over 100 desk jobs and slashes costly built-in overtime benefits while modernizing Nassau’s 1972 eight precinct-building plan to account for the last 40 years of technology enhancements that have reduced administrative workload throughout the department. The COP plan corrects imbalances in current workload, as three police precincts presently perform twice the workload of the remaining five precincts.

Mangano announced today the allocation of a $125,000 Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) to the Village of New Hyde Park. The grant will fund a variety of projects in the Village, including streetscape improvements and commercial façade enhancement that will complement already-completed sidewalk improvements, newly installed decorative street lights, pocket parks, and new brick paving. - Mangano Awards Over $1 Million To Hempstead Village For Downtown Revitalization, Neighborhood Improvements, After School Programs & Safe Routes To School Nassau County Executive Edward P. Mangano announced today the allocation of a nearly $1.2 million Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) to the Village of Hempstead – the largest grant made to any incorporated Village in this year. The grant will fund a variety of projects in the Village, including improvements to streets and sidewalks in both the downtown business district and residential neighborhoods. The CDBG will also help fund a variety of after school programs, including the Hempstead PAL recreational activities, PeeWee Football/Cheerleading Program, At-Risk Youth Basketball Program, and the EOC Soccer program. - Mangano & Dale Release Enhanced COP Plan For Nassau County Nassau County Executive Edward P. Mangano and Police Commissioner Thomas Dale today announced their intention to submit to the County Legislature a COmmunity Policing (COP) Plan that reassigns 48 police officers from desk jobs to Problem Oriented Police (POP) positions and transforms four current precincts into new Community Policing Centers to be located throughout the County. The plan eliminates over 100 desk jobs and slashes costly built-in overtime benefits while modernizing Nassau’s 1970’s eight precinct-building plan to account for the last 40 years of technology enhancements that have reduced administrative workload throughout the department. The COP plan corrects imbalances in current workload, as three police precincts presently perform twice the workload of the remaining five precincts.

Mangano and New York State Assemblyman Harvey Weisenberg joined Monster Truck Driver Greg Winchenbach and children from the Peninsula Public Library to celebrate after reading over 4,000 books collectively as part of the “Reading with Monsters” Program. The Nassau Library System and Monster Jam partnered to promote reading amongst children between the ages of 4 and 12 from November 9, 2011 – January 16, 2012. A 5-week reading program was offered through 54 libraries within the Nassau Library System. The children were invited to participate in the program by reading books off a suggested pre-determined reading list. Six different levels were set and each time a child achieved a level, he or she received a Monster Jam themed prize. The library with the most participants was awarded the Grand Prize of a real Monster Truck and driver visit.
