NEWS BRIEF: Nickerson Beach Park opens for the summer season on Memorial Day weekend, May 28. For more information, see "News & Events" below.

NICKERSON BEACH, PART OF THE COUNTY PARK SYSTEM SINCE 1967, has undergone an extensive multimillion-dollar renovation that has transformed it into one of the most desirable locations along the ocean, cited by Newsday in 2009 as “Perfect for a family looking to let off a little summer steam, this has everything a kid, or a kid at heart, could want on a warm day.”

The renovation work has included construction of a beautiful family "Fun Zone" with a skate park, colorful basketball courts with fiberglass backboards, and a state-of-the-art playground that incorporates special attractions such as climbing apparatus and puzzles. The Fun Zone provides a seamless area that can accommodate children in a broad age range, so that moms and dads can watch a youngster in the playground while an older child goes to the nearby basketball court or skating park. In addition to the creation of the Fun Zone, other improvements included renovation of the popular cabana areas, new benches and grills, a new baseball field and repaved parking areas. In 2008, nine new beach volleyball courts were added for leagues and individuals, with two adjacent picnic areas.

The park also offers all-terrain wheelchairs for the disabled, available by reservation.

The park includes areas by the beach that are cordoned off to protect nesting areas for the Piping Plover, a sparrow-sized shorebird that is protected by federal law.

During the summer season (Memorial Day - Labor Day), parking fees are charged as follows:

  • Daily: $8 for Leisure Pass holders and $30 for non-Leisure Pass holders.
  • Season sticker: Leisure Pass holders, $80; seniors, disabled, volunteer firefighters, auxiliary police & veterans, $40 (Leisure Pass required); non-Leisure Pass holders, $200.

Nickerson Beach Park Opens for Summer Season Over Memorial Day Weekend

Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano announces that Nickerson Beach Park — the only County-run park located on the Atlantic Ocean — will open for the summer season Memorial Day weekend, Saturday, May 28. Nickerson Beach will remain open seven days a week from sunrise to sunset over the summer.

A 121-acre park, Nickerson is located on Lido Boulevard in the village of Lido Beach. The park offers a beautiful three-quarter-mile-long shoreline and large beach as well as numerous attractions. These include the “Fun Zone,” a seamless family-focused recreational site that incorporates a skate park, colorful basketball courts with fiberglass backboards, and a state-of-the-art playground with special attractions such as climbing apparatus and puzzles.

In addition, there is a new nautical-themed playground by the West Cabana area that incorporates slides, climbing apparatus and a ship with various interactive features. The park also features swimming pools, beach volleyball courts, picnic areas, cabanas, a campground, pools, athletic fields, a dog run, and a concession.

Nickerson Beach is also one of the four parks taking part in the County’s Summer Recreation Program, which begins July 5 and runs for six weeks. The program, for children ages five to 12, offers two sessions: either 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. or 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

This year, the program has added swimming to a menu of activities that includes arts and crafts, board and recreational games, a range of athletic programs, and special programs. Fees range from $600 for one child for the shorter session to $750 for the full-day session, with discounts available for both sessions for additional children from the same family. The registration deadline is June 11.

During the summer season, daily parking fees at Nickerson are $8 for Leisure Pass holders and $30 for non-Leisure Pass holders; seasonal passes are also available.

County Parks Begin Accepting Picnic Reservations on February 7

Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano announces that reservations for the coming season may be made at Nassau County parks beginning Monday, February 7, 2011. Reservations can be made for the following parks:

Reservations must be made in person at park locations, and a valid Leisure Pass and appropriate payment (fees depend upon group size) must be presented to obtain a confirmed reservation. Payment can be made by cash, check (made out to “Treasurer of Nassau County”) or credit card (at some locations). “Rain-or-shine” shelter areas are available at Cedar Creek Park, Rev. Arthur Mackey Sr. Park and Wantagh Park.

County regulations require that 75% of all picnic participants be Nassau County residents. A special permit is required for the use of alcoholic beverages, and this permit must be purchased at least one week in advance of any reserved or unreserved picnic. To make catering arrangements, patrons must contact the park concessionaire, Dover Caterers, at 516-933-4444, ext. 12 or 16. Picnic reservations must be secured from the individual park before catering can be arranged.

WPIX-Channel 11 Morning News Visits Nickerson Beach Campground

For the WPIX-Channel 11 Morning News, July 20th was in fact a day at the beach, as reporter Lisa Mateo and two of her colleagues spent several hours at the Nickerson Beach Park campground doing a variety of interviews, including one with Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano.

The visit was spurred by the recreational vehicle industry’s promotion of its 100th anniversary and the popularity of Nickerson Beach’s campground among RV owners. Nickerson Beach is one of only two campground sites in Nassau County. The second, Battle Row Campground, is located in Bethpage and is also run by the county.

Mateo, who filed several reports from the campground during the course of the morning newscast, was joined by engineer Fred Ciardi and cameraman Jonathan Fine, an avid camper who gave a tour of his vintage RV as part of the program. Fine also provided a listing of some of his favorite RV sites, including Nickerson Beach.

About midway through the 4 1/2-hour newscast, County Executive Mangano sat for a hearty breakfast with a family and discussed the campground and a number of additional recreational activities in the county.
