(Mineola, NY) Nassau County Assessor Harvey Levinson, Presiding Officer Judith Jacobs and Minority Leader Peter Schmitt today agreed to extend the administrative deadline of August 16th to August 20th for school districts to submit their adopted budgets to the County so that final tax rates can be determined for preparation of the October 2004 school tax bills.
“Legislators Jacobs and Schmitt agreed with my decision to authorize the extension so that school districts could be given the opportunity to apply the additional state-aid to their budgets and lower the tax levies that will be imposed this October,” stated Assessor Levinson.
The extension was agreed upon after it was learned that the New York State Legislature had approved (pending Governor Pataki’s signature) $28.6 million dollars in additional state-aid for public school districts throughout Nassau County.
Given the delay in the adoption of this year’s State Budget, school district financial planners were forced to under-estimate the amount state aid in the spending plans that were submitted to voters in May. Assessor Levinson indicated that while some school districts have already submitted their spending plans to the County, districts now have the additional time that they need to resubmit their adjusted budgets with the new state-aid figures.
“I applaud the efforts of our State and County Legislators, Presiding Officer Judy Jacobs, and Minority Leader Peter Schmitt for working in a bipartisan manner to do all that they can to help reduce the tremendous school tax burden that is imposed each year on our homeowners,” concluded Assessor Levinson. |
