(Mineola, NY) Nassau County Assessor Harvey Levinson today announced that he is repealing a $3 dollar fee that his predecessor charged to constituents who requested a receipt as proof of filing for a property tax exemption.
"Since fees charged by a County Department are usually set by the Legislature, I assumed that this unnecessary charge was imposed as an additional revenue source to the County," stated Assessor Levinson. "Thanks to Legislator Peter Schmitt's recommendation, I have instructed my divisions to stop charging this fee."
In response to Legislator Schmitt's recent survey of Department of Assessment protocols, Assessor Levinson is conducting a full audit of all of the fees that have been charged by the former administration. The Department of Assessment will provide any resident who brings in a copy of their property exemption application in person with a "date received" copy upon request.
"Sometimes in government we accept, at face value, long adopted policies as law," concluded Assessor Levinson. "That is why I am happy to work with legislators on both sides of the aisle to identify problems and find better ways to provide services to the residents of Nassau County." |
