Assessor Levinson To Hold Public Forum For East Meadow Residents

Media Contact: Randolph Yunker - (516) 571-2490

(Mineola, NY) Nassau County Board of Assessors Chairman Harvey Levinson will hold a public forum on assessment issues for homeowners residing in the East Meadow School District on Monday, February 27, from 7 - 9 p.m. in the East Meadow High School auditorium located at 101 Carman Avenue.

Assessor Levinson will use the forum as an opportunity to respond to recent school district mailings that have distorted the facts surrounding the court-ordered reassessment of all residential properties throughout the county and address a number of misleading statements made by the superintendent of schools.

"To help homeowners gain a clearer understanding of the assessment process and details pertaining to their individual property values, I have requested that the school district work with the County's Information and Technology Department to establish a link to the Department of Assessment Website for my presentation," stated Assessor Levinson.

While the assessor's responsibilities are clearly defined under statute and by the New York State Office of Real Property Services (ORPS) as determining the fair market value of a home based on what a willing purchaser would pay at a specific point-in-time, Assessor Levinson will explain how individual homeowners can calculate their school property tax obligation based on information that is released by the school district prior to the May budget vote.

"Homeowners need to be aware of the fact that even if annual reassessment did not take place, ORPS would still establish an equalization rate to determine the size of the class share or how much value there is in a district to tax based on the real estate market activity in a given community," Assessor Levinson concluded. "My hope is that my public forum will provide a more transparent view of a complicated process."
