(Mineola, NY) Nassau County – with over 418,000 residential, commercial and utility properties – is the second largest assessing jurisdiction in the State of New York.
In 2005, the Department of Assessment employed over 175 CSEA employees who, under the direction of Board of Assessors Chairman Harvey B. Levinson, worked each day to improve the accuracy and fairness of the County’s assessment roll.
As the only elected county assessor in the state, Chairman Levinson is responsible for administering all NYS Real Property Tax Exemptions, producing an assessment roll that reflects the fair market value of properties based on a specific point in time, and maintaining County parcel maps.
The Department of Assessment does not set operating budgets or tax rates, mail out tax bills, or collect taxes. Its statutory function is to determine the assessed values of properties under a four-property class system that is mandated under Article 18 of the New York State Real Property Tax Law written in 1982.
Chairman Levinson has prepared the 2005 Annual Report (link to the complete report is below) to help residents gain a better understanding of Department of Assessment functions and highlighted a number of his many initiatives that improved departmental operations and the accuracy of assessments.
