County Clerk Announces

‘Veterans Recognition Program’

(Mineola, NY)  Nassau County Clerk Maureen O’Connell, joined by area veterans and members of the business community, announced the Nassau County Clerk ‘Veterans Recognition Program’.  This initiative offers veterans discounts on goods and services at local businesses in recognition of their service to our country.  During these economic times, this is a great way to stimulate the local economy by publicizing our neighborhood businesses while safeguarding vital documents that are necessary to obtain important services.

“As we celebrate Independence Day, what better time to show our appreciation to the men and women of our armed forces who have preserved and protected our freedoms,” said O’Connell.  Modeled after a program started by the Levittown Chamber of Commerce, County Clerk O’Connell is launching the discount program county-wide.  Currently over 75,000 veterans reside in Nassau County and more than 3000 have returned from serving in the Middle East.  One of the services provided by the Clerk’s Office is the recording of Veteran Discharge Papers (DD-214) free of charge making them easily accessible to the veteran should they ever need it.  Veterans who record their discharge papers will be given an identification card enabling them to take advantage of the many discounts being offered by participating businesses.

“We will continue to work with the Chambers of Commerce throughout the county and local businesses to expand on this service to our veterans,” said O’Connell.  The ‘Veterans Recognition Program’ is an opportunity to promote our area businesses and community downtown areas, and the Clerk’s Office will continue to recruit businesses from car washes to restaurants.

Veterans interested in filing their discharge papers and businesses who would like to participate in this program can contact the Clerk’s Office at (516) 571-2664 for further information.
