COUNTY CLERK JOINS IFTAR CELEBRATION

(Mineola, NY)  Nassau County Clerk Maureen O’Connell joined Nassau County Executive Edward Mangano and members of Nassau County’s Islamic community for their 3rd Annual Iftar Party Celebration.  Muslim-American residents came together with community leaders at all levels of government to celebrate Iftar.   Iftar is the meal which is eaten after sunset during Sawm, the fasting which occurs during the month of Ramadan in Muslim tradition.  Iftar usually starts with consuming a date and drinking water, a tradition which goes back to the earliest days of Islam.  It is common for people to eat Iftar in large groups, making the fast breaking into a community party where people can socialize with friends and neighbors.
