Weitzman: ‘You don’t have to be an accountant to understand it.’

Comptroller releases Annual ‘Plain Language’ Financial Report

For the second consecutive year, Nassau County Comptroller Howard Weitzman has issued a plain-language financial condition report aimed at providing Nassau County taxpayers with a summary of the County’s finances presented in a simple and easy-to-read format.

"The 2008 Financial Condition Report gives the average citizen who does not have a degree in accounting a concise look at the County’s finances,” said Comptroller Howard Weitzman. “The report presents a ‘user-friendly’ snapshot of Nassau County’s fiscal health and includes key economic and demographic statistics about living and working in our County. This year we also address the County’s response to the economic downturn.”

The report is available at the bottom of this release or by calling 516-571-2386.  The report will also be mailed out to reference libraries, schools, civic organizations and other research institutions. In addition, hundreds of organizations and community groups have agreed to forward the report in electronic ‘PDF’ format through email to their membership.

The Financial Condition Report is being issued as a complement to the annual Comprehensive Annual Financial Report (CAFR). Nassau County’s CAFR, which has received national recognition annually from the Government Finance Officers Association for excellence in financial reporting, is prepared under the demanding rules of the Government Accounting Standards Board and is audited by the County’s independent outside auditors. The 2008 Financial Condition Report summarizes and simplifies much of the same information.

“It’s the right of all County tax payers to know how their tax dollars are being spent,” said Weitzman. “Financial reports shouldn’t be a mystery.”
