STATEMENT BY COMPTROLLER HOWARD S. WEITZMAN
RE: NASSAU COUNTY 2007 BUDGET

“I am encouraged that County Executive Suozzi is proposing a budget for 2007 that avoids a tax increase.  He recognizes, as do I, that it is essential to find ways to balance the budget without increasing the burden on the hard-pressed taxpayers of Nassau County. 

“Nassau, like other mature suburbs, faces a difficult fiscal environment and a widening structural deficit.  My staff and I will be analyzing the Suozzi budget over the next few weeks to assess whether its assumptions of revenues and expense savings are truly realistic.  We expect to report our findings to the Legislature in early October.”
