and Increase Police and Public Safety

Nassau County Executive Thomas R. Suozzi and Police Commissioner William J. Willett announced today that 74 Nassau County police officers from all over the county would be redeployed in order to reduce overtime and to improve police presence and public safety.

According to County Executive Suozzi "The redeployment of these officers will save the county $2.4 million. This initiative will not only allow the county to save money, but allow police management to be more efficient and effective through the redeployment of their personnel"

"I am glad to be working with the Suozzi administration as they hit the ground running on these types of reforms," said Joseph Scannell, Chairman of the Legislatures Public Safety Committee. "This will help add police officers where they are needed most."

The 74 officers will be reassigned from various non-patrol duties in each of the eight police precincts and placed on patrol duties throughout their respect commands. Former precinct based assignments such as parking enforcement, radar patrols and other specialized patrols, will be reduced or eliminated. The tasks formerly handled by these 74 officers will be handled by those police officers remaining in similar assignments or be required on general patrol.

"The bottom line is," said Commissioner Willett "by taking this action we will save money and put more police officers on the street."
