| Nassau County Executive Tom Suozzi and Chief of Department Raymond Crawford announce the implementation of NASS-STAT, a program designed to improve police staffing and efficiency. |
NASS-STAT, modeled after similar programs in New York City and Boston, is a management philosophy that provides for better accountability in all the police precincts throughout the county. "This program is intended to improve department structure, reduce crime and improve morale," said the County Executive. "NASS-STAT gives more control to precinct commanders to implement changes and create solutions in their individual precincts."
The central process behind NASS-STAT is divided into two parts. First is the strategy development and implementation phase. By using current crime and police data analyzed at the precinct level, precinct commanders can identify priorities within the community and develop solutions to remedy a particular situation. With support from the Deputy Chief and other senior staff, the precinct commander can then implement the strategy and analyze the results.
The second part of the process is a review of the strategy and department follow-up meetings. Through weekly data reports, GIS mapping of crime distribution, and monthly department-level meetings, the precinct commander then defends the actions taken to remedy that situation to a panel of senior staff. These monthly meetings will also include representatives from the District Attorney's Office, Sheriff's Department, Probation Department, Department of Social Services, Department of Public Works, and the Department of Recreation and Parks.
"The idea is to come up with a systemic solution to a reoccurring problem," added Commissioner Willett. "Through the collection of data we can identify 'hot spots' throughout the county and develop a plan to solve the problem, once and for all."
"We are very fortunate to have a professional police force and low crime. I respect and admire every member of our police who are out there every day protecting and serving the people of this County," said the County Executive. "NASS-STAT will make a great department even better."
