Thank you for your interest and participation in the most important phase of this project.
Our objective is to select a design for the memorial that will have the most impact that represents a day that forever marked a turning point in American History.
All submissions to the design challenge will be accepted and considered provided they meet the following criteria:
- The design must incorporate, either in the design or on the site, two (2) steel girders recovered from Ground Zero. Because the girders are as they fell at Ground Zero, they must stay as true to the original form as presented.
- The design must include the names of the victims who perished which will be provided for the chosen design but number in the mid 200's
- The design must be able to be illuminated at night.
- The design must incorporate water either within or as a feature.
- The design must include the use of three flagpoles (The American Flag, NY State Flag and the Nassau County Flag).
- All designs must include space for a garden, which may be provided by a professional landscape designer (so keep in mind that your design must be incorporated with landscape as well).
- All designs submitted must include itemized speculation costs.
The design challenge will be open from September 30, 2002 and all submissions will be accepted for review up until the close of business January 31, 2003. Remember to include your name, address, daytime telephone, email (if any) and the name and location of either your school or place of employment.
On March 15, 2003 the Project Committee will announce its final selection.

The location is the hillside overlooking Eisenhower Pond adjacent to the Harry Chapin Lake Side Theater. (If you go towards the golf driving range, which will be on your right, the theater will be on your left followed by the pond and then the hillside locale just opposite the Nassau County Police horse stables.)
Feel free to go to the location and look around to get a better idea if need be.
Good luck on your submission and remember to submit the very best from within yourself because if your design is chosen it will stand for generations to come.
