Suozzi asks residents to: "SHOP NASSAU COUNTY"

Garden City, NY - On Friday, November 29th, known as Black Friday in the world of retailing, Nassau County Executive Thomas R. Suozzi was at Roosevelt Field to show support for Nassau County's businesses and to ask residents to, "Shop Nassau County."

"Sales Tax Revenue is crucial in the overall fiscal recovery of Nassau County, making up 33% of the revenues to County's general fund," said County Executive Suozzi. "We can help the fiscal crisis by shopping in Nassau County so that we can keep the County in the Black. If you are going to shop for the holiday season, shop in Nassau County instead of New York City or while on vacation in Florida. The more revenue we raise in sales taxes the less we will need to generate in property taxes."

In December 2001 Retail Sales in Nassau were estimated at $1.4 billion, resulting sales tax revenues for December 2001 were estimated at $61.3 million, 12% of the annual retail sales tax revenue figure of $532,287,513.71. Overall retail sales made up 33% of Nassau County's general fund revenues.

"Total Projected Retail Sales Tax revenue figure for 2002 is $517,074,671.00, which is 33% of all revenues to the general fund. Since history shows us that on average retail sales equal in December make up 12% of the overall retail sales tax revenues to the county, we are estimating just over $62 million in retail sales tax revenues will come in this year," said Suozzi. "However we are hoping for more and that is why we want people to Shop Nassau."
