Nassau County is Ready

County Executive Outlines Nassau County's Response to National Alert

Mineola, NY- Nassau County Executive Thomas R. Suozzi, joined by Police Commissioner James Lawrence, Director of Emergency Management Richard Rotanz, Presiding Officer Judy Jacobs, Minority Leader Peter Schmitt, Hempstead Town Supervisor Kate Murray, Oyster Bay Town Supervisor John Venditto, and Glen Cove Mayor Maryann Holzkamp, held a press conference today at Nassau County police headquarters to announce the County's preparedness efforts now that our country is at war. Also in attendance were Rockville Centre Mayor Eugene Murray, Lynbrook Mayor Gene Scarpato, Oyster Bay Cove Mayor Mike Perregini and Bayville Mayor Vicky Siegel.

"We stand ready, with all Americans, in support of our President and the men and women who are risking their lives in the Iraqi conflict," said County Executive Suozzi. "Residents should continue with their daily routines. Nassau County is ready and prepared for any retaliation that may come as a result of the war."

Along with the rest of the Nation, Nassau County has increased its measures to correspond with the heightened level of alert:

  1. Pro-Active Policing: Sensitive locations have been identified throughout the County by the Police Department and will be monitored by increased police patrols. In addition, increased Marine patrols are working in conjunction with the Coast Guard as well as increased aviation coverage throughout the County.
  2. Enhanced Communication: County agencies and officials are receiving daily briefings from the White House, the State, and New York City.
  3. Enhanced Coordination: County agencies and officials have been reaching out to all levels of local government as well as volunteer fire departments, in an effort to coordinate resources if called upon and there will be a community meeting tonight at 7:00PM with local fire officials, Police departments and emergency personnel.

Residents are advised to continue to call 911 in the event of an emergency. For any other information or to report suspicious persons or activity, residents should call the Nassau County Police Department's Information Hotline at 1-800-244-TIPS. The Nassau County Department of Health maintains a general information referral line from 9:00AM-4: 45PM at (516) 571-3410.
