County Announces Plan for Real Estate Consolidation
Plan Will Save Taxpayers Millions
Mineola, NY- Nassau County Executive Thomas R. Suozzi today presented Nassau County's Real Estate Consolidation Plan.
The Plan, which calls for the creation of five government campuses, will conserve space, create efficiencies, better working conditions and improve the County's image while saving much-needed County dollars.
"This plan will save the County millions and put an end to inefficiency, illogical growth, waste and mismanagement," said County Executive Suozzi. "We are committed to creating a cleaner, more efficient working environment for all County Employees. It is important that any plan balances the needs of County government in harmony with the needs and concerns of the local community."
The overall objective of the consolidation plan is to create five campuses to house related government offices and functions. These campuses are:
| Public Safety Center: |
County Police Bureaus, Fire Marshall, Emergency Services |
| Government Operations: |
County Executive, Legislature, independently elected officials, and all other agencies not included in the other campuses |
| Health and Human Services: |
Health, Mental Health, Social Services, Drug & Alcohol, Senior Citizens, Youth Board, Veterans Services, Physically Challenged |
| Corrections: |
County Jail, Additional Emergency Management Function, and County Storage |
| County Courts: |
County, Supreme, and Matrimonial Courts (*The County is mandated by the New York State Office of Court Administration to build a new Family Court) |
As a result, the County will drastically reduce its overall number of primary facilities and significayeantly increase operational efficiencies.
The plan is the culmination of almost a year of analysis of the County's entire real estate holdings by the County's Real Estate Department, Insignia/ESG, and more recently the project manager Carter Burgess. The plan envisions the following:
| The Public Safety Center: |
The County's public safety agencies would relocate to the King Kullen Building in New Cassel as well as Grumman hangar #7 in Bethpage |
| Government Operations Center: |
The historical renovation of the Old County Courthouse and expansion of One West Street in Mineola |
| Health and Human Services: |
The intake and administrative functions of Health and Human Services would split into two buildings: a leased off-campus site as a client based facility and an administration center at 1490 Franklin Avenue |
| Correctional Center: |
Will remain at its present location |
| County Court Complex: |
Expansion of the existing court complex to accommodate Family Court and Matrimonial Court |
Nassau County's real estate holdings have grown dramatically over the past six decades to support the needs of the population. Consequently, this rapid growth has resulted in inefficiencies and unneeded properties throughout the County. Presently, the County has 1317 vacant parcels of land, maintains 577 sumps, owns or occupies 766 buildings, and leases 56 facilities.
