County Executive Thomas Suozzi Serves 9 Millionth Meal At Local Senior Center

In a visit to the Hempstead Senior Community Service Center on July 14th, Nassau County Executive Thomas R. Suozzi served the 9 millionth meal in Nassau County’s Senior Nutrition Program to Annie Manning of West Hempstead.  Mrs. Manning, 94 years young, has been a participant of the Center for the past 24 years.  A vibrant and active member, she loves to dance and enjoys the line dancing and exercise programs that are offered weekly.  Annie is a talented craftsperson and shares her love of making simple, yet beautiful, crafts with other Center participants.  For the past 15 years, she has hosted a crafts class that turns everyday objects into colorful crafts.

According to County Executive Suozzi, “It was a pleasure to meet Annie Manning and share this milestone occasion with her.  She typifies the strong women of her generation who believe in giving back to the community through volunteerism, and she is to be commended for the many hours of service she has provided.  In addition, it is especially fitting, as we celebrate Older Americans Month during May, to pay tribute to these Senior Centers and acknowledge their importance in the lives of the many older persons who participate regularly.”

“Annie’s twin sister lives in Florida, and when she visits, friends at the Center have a difficult time telling them apart, since the two sisters look and talk alike,” said Eileen Walsh, Center Director.  “Annie has always been an asset to the program.  She believes that the secret to a long and happy life is to help others.  Her knack for making people feel welcome has earned her the title of ‘official greeter’ for new members.”

The Senior Nutrition Program, now in its 33rd year, offers a nutritious hot lunch, educational, health-related and recreational activities, information, supportive assistance and transportation to more than 8,000 older persons each year.  “These programs enable participants to remain living independently in their own communities for as long as possible,” said Dr. Sharon Mullon, Commissioner of the Nassau County Department of Senior Citizen Affairs.  “Maintaining good nutrition is the most important component of a range of services which preserves this independence and we are proud to offer these and many other programs that are designed to meet the needs of our residents and enhance their quality of life.”
