Suozzi Announces Reconstruction of Freeport Roadway

Joins Village of Freeport Mayor Bill Glacken to Announce Agreement Between County and Village

Mineola, N.Y .- Residents of Freeport will find their commutes a bit smoother with the reconstruction of Guy Lombardo Avenue, Nassau County Executive Thomas R. Suozzi announced alongside Freeport Mayor Bill Glacken and Legislator David Denenberg (D-Merrick). The announcement came at the groundbreaking at the intersection of Guy Lombardo and East Avenues on Friday, October 28, 2005.

The project is the result of a cooperative effort between the County and the Village of Freeport, and will include a complete rehabilitation of the roadway's surface, as well as improved drainage to minimize flooding, and new curbs and sidewalks. Nassau County is providing the approximately $6.5 million for the project from the County's Capital Improvement Program. The Village will oversee the construction, and accept ownership of the road upon completion. The County is eligible to receive $956,000 in Federal funding.

"When governments work together, everybody benefits," County Executive Suozzi said. "And now that the County is back on solid financial footing, quality of life issues like road reconstruction can be handled. In the past, projects like this weren't a priority. This particular roadway has been on the books for reconstruction since 1994. Now, with the cooperation of Mayor Glacken and the County Legislature, Freeport is finally getting the road it deserves."

"This unique partnership is an example of inter-municipal cooperation between Freeport and Nassau County to achieve an important public objective," said Mayor Glacken. "This project is a major step forward in our downtown revitalization effort."

"I have guided this massive improvement project through from the beginning and I am proud to see it become a reality," said Legislator Denenberg. "The inter-municipal agreement between the county and the Village of Freeport is a win-win for the taxpayers."
