County Participates in LIPA's 3rd Annual Islandwide Hurricane Preparation Drill
Mineola, NY – Nassau County is asking its employees to participate in the Third Annual "I'm Ready" Islandwide Emergency Preparedness Drill - sponsored by LIPA - by reducing power consumption between noon and 3 p.m. on Friday, June 2nd.
“Weather experts have predicted that we could see a rise in the frequency and severity of hurricanes in the North Atlantic this year, raising the possibility of Nassau County and all of Long Island finding itself in harm’s way,” said County Executive Thomas R. Suozzi. “By participating in this drill, we are further preparing ourselves to deal with the potentially devastating consequences of a major storm. Families should also review their own readiness plans in the event of a major storm or other emergency.”
During the drill, LIPA is calling on all of its commercial, governmental, and residential customers to reduce non-essential electric use from noon to 3 p.m. on Friday, June 2 to practice emergency response procedures should power fail during a major weather or emergency event.
“Our goal is to create awareness that if an emergency occurs, whether it’s caused by a major storm or a terrorist attack, Long Islanders will be ready to respond and cope,” said LIPA Chairman Richard M. Kessel.
The Nassau County Office of Emergency Management will also activate its Emergency Operations Center Friday for a tabletop exercise to simulate the landfall of a hurricane and test its own preparedness, reinforcing County Executive Suozzi’s commitment to getting County residents ready for a possible evacuation.
“I am asking all Nassau County residents, especially those along the South Shore, to put together an emergency evacuation kit, and have a family plan, should they need to leave their homes,” Suozzi said. “Make sure that you have water, non-perishable food, medicine, cash, flashlights and batteries, spare clothing and any other essentials you’ll need.”
