Suozzi Signs Domestic Workers

Bill of Rights

-- Legislation Protects Domestic Workers Against Exploitation, Abuse

Mineola, N.Y. – Nassau County Executive Thomas R. Suozzi, joined by Nassau County legislators and domestic workers, today signed the Domestic Workers Bill of Rights.

The law, sponsored by Legislator Dave Mejias and passed unanimously by the Nassau County Legislature, protects domestic and household workers against unfair labor practices, exploitation and abuse.

The bill requires domestic employment agencies to give their workers a written bill of rights – including information about minimum wage, overtime, Social Security and unemployment and disability insurance – and a contract describing working conditions before placement. The agencies are also responsible for having both workers and employers sign the required forms. All information will be in the appropriate language.

“Information is a powerful tool, and this bill ensures both domestic workers and their employers know their rights and responsibilities,” Suozzi said. “These workers, many of whom are immigrant women, have too often been the vulnerable victims of careless, exploitive or abusive employers.”

The law, which will take effect in six months, provides a fine of up to $1,000 for each violation. The Nassau County Commission on Human Rights is charged with enforcement.
