Suozzi Welcomes Single Mom to New Home as Part of Affordable Housing Program in Hempstead Village

-- Funding from Nassau County, Hempstead Village Helps Build Homes; County Grant Allows 1st-Time Buyers Afford Down Payment

Hempstead, N.Y. – Nassau County Executive Thomas R. Suozzi welcomed single mother Venus Franks into her new home today as part of a county effort to provide funding to help build affordable housing in the Hempstead Heights section of the Village of Hempstead.

The county joined forces with the Village of Hempstead, New York State Affordable Housing Corp., Long Island Housing Partnership, Inc., Middle County Resource Management, Inc. and the Hempstead Heights Civic Association, to develop the Remsen Mews Project. The project consists of eight single-family homes – four attached townhouses, three colonial style houses and one ranch.

“It is partnerships like this one that help make the American dream – the dream of owning a home – come true for those who once believed it was out of reach,” Suozzi said. “I want to commend all the parties – government agencies and non-profits – that are helping make the dream a reality for eight families.”

“I’m pleased our village is able to assist people who would not otherwise afford regular market value homes,” said Hempstead Village Mayor Wayne Hall. “Ms. Franks is a hard-working single mother of two children. She has been renting a home for several years, and it gives me great pleasure to see her open the doors of her new home today.”

Nassau County awarded $600,000 in federal Housing and Urban Development funds to the Remsen Mews project. The Village of Hempstead Community Development Association contributed $70,000.

In addition, a $10,000 grant from Nassau County’s First-Time Homebuyer Down Payment Assistance Program – along with an additional $25,000 from the state – helped Venus Franks, mother of two, pay the down payment for the ranch house priced at $167,000. Seven other Hempstead families are set to move into these homes that would otherwise cost over $300,000. Each family received a $10,000 down payment grant from the county. The eight families were chosen through a lottery last summer.
