County Launches Adoption Referral and Information Line

Mineola, NY – Nassau County Executive Thomas R. Suozzi, joined by adoptive families, today announced the creation of the Nassau County Adoption Referral and Information phone line, underscoring Nassau County’s commitment to making adoption easier in Nassau County.  Together with Spence-Chapin Services to Families and Children, one of the programs receiving a grant from the County Executive’s Common Sense for Common Good (CSCG) initiative, Suozzi highlighted the success of CSCG, which is just completing its first full year of funding.

“Every child in Nassau County deserves a loving home and every pregnant woman deserves to have the support needed both during her pregnancy and after giving birth,” Suozzi said. “These resources will help ensure that every woman facing an unintended pregnancy in Nassau County is given information about and access to the choice of adoption, and also provide assistance to those who have adopted a child into their families.”

In 2007, there were 156 adoptions completed through Nassau County Family Court, while 35 children were adopted through Nassau County’s Department of Social Services Foster Care program. Adoptive services is one component of CSCG, which strives to reduce the need for abortions by preventing unintended pregnancies, promoting adoption and providing housing for single mothers.  The initiative has united organizations as diverse as Planned Parenthood and Catholic Charities.

“Common Sense for the Common Good is a program that helps real people in the real world – and it embraces those on all sides of the abortion debate,” said Suozzi. “This program helps women and families make the most informed decisions they can by offering access to services. Nassau County is taking real action to reduce unintended pregnancies and provide women with resources in a way rhetoric never can.”
