Suozzi Kicks Off House Calls to 17,000
Levittown Households
As GreenLevittown Canvassers Hit the Streets
Levittown, NY – Nassau County Executive Tom Suozzi kicked off his GreenLevittown campaign today, as a team of a dozen canvassers embarked on a three-month effort to make personal visits to every household here, bringing news and advice about energy- and money-saving programs, products, services, and subsidies. The initiative is aimed at turning this iconic American suburb into the nation’s greenest suburb by substantially reducing Levittown’s carbon footprint in 2008.
The County Executive’s visit to 12 Shield Lane launched the door-to-door campaign, which is being coordinated by Citizens Campaign for the Environment, the long-established environmental advocacy group. Residents will be encouraged to install an energy-saving device, replace old boilers, upgrade insulation and windows, switch to energy-efficient light bulbs, and try new technologies like solar heaters and biofuels.
“If we’re going to win the war against global warming,” said Suozzi, “We need to enlist everyday Americans, and we need to give them strong reasons to participate – today. To do this, we need to make it easy and affordable, and we need to do it in a way that respects people’s priorities and paying the bills and caring for their families.
Suozzi’s green initiative will entail home visits, strong promotional literature, a website (www.greenlevittown.com), special events and local advertising. Next week, Suozzi will begin speaking at several Levittown schools, aiming to bring GreenLevittown’s message home through the community’s youngest residents.
GreenLevittown is being funded by 10 corporate sponsors who are stepping up to offer giveaways, discounts, utility rebates, and low-interest financing. GreenLevittown partners include Alure Home Improvements, Bethpage Federal Credit Unions, EarthKind Energy, Intellidyne LLC, KeySpan, Lazard Ltd., Long Island Power Authority, P.C.
