Suozzi and Milano The New School for Management and Urban Policy
Announce Scholarship for Nassau Residents

Scholarship being offered to honor Suozzi’s participation in Urban Conversations Conference

Mineola, NY - Nassau County Executive Thomas R. Suozzi and Milano The New School for Management and Urban Policy today announced the availability of the Urban Conversations Scholarship for aspiring Nassau graduate students starting in the Fall 2008 semester. The New School is dedicating this scholarship to Suozzi for his participation in the conference Urban Conversations: Strengthening the Middle Class on Friday, June 1, 2007.

Urban Conversations is a conference series presented by Milano that regularly convenes prominent chief executives, journalists, academics, foundation officials, and opinion leaders to discuss pressing issues of urban and suburban governance. Urban Conversations: Strengthening the Middle Class focused on the crisis of affordability for the shrinking middle class in cities and metropolitan areas and potential solutions. Suozzi used this forum to bring attention to issues facing Nassau’s middle class, including high property taxes, traffic congestion, and lack of affordable housing. Suozzi discussed his vision of New Suburbia to address these challenges with Washington D.C. Mayor Adrian Fenty, Atlanta Mayor Shirley Franklin, and Ester Fuchs, Professor of Public Affairs and Political Science at Columbia University.

“The Urban Conversations Scholarship will train future leaders of Nassau’s non-profit, public, and private sectors and enable them to make a positive impact on Nassau County when they graduate,” said Suozzi, “I thank the New School for offering this scholarship to Nassau residents and for bringing attention to the important issue of affordability for the middle class”.

The Urban Conversations Scholarship Fund was inaugurated in 2006 to broaden its student applicant pool to regional candidates from across the United States. Master’s degree applicants from Nassau County are eligible to apply to this merit-based, annually renewable scholarship.

The scholarship amount can be up to full tuition based on merit. The scholarship does not cover living expenses.
