Garden City, NY - Nassau County Executive Thomas R. Suozzi administered the oath of office in Maria Torroella Carney, M.D., as the Nassau County Commissioner of Health.  The ceremony followed his dedication of the new Department of Health offices at 106 Charles Lindbergh Boulevard in Uniondale.

The newly renovated building is staffed with the remaining 200 members of the Health Department, formerly in Mineola, and is located on the same campus as the Health and Human Services building. Additional Health Department staff is located at the Health Department Laboratory in Hempstead and at six WIC (Women, Infants and Children) sites across the county.

Dr. Carney’s appointment resulted from a nationwide search that began over a year ago.  She has most recently served as director of the palliative care program at Glengariff Health Care Center in Glen Cove.  Since 1998, Dr. Carney has been affiliated with Winthrop University Hospital and has held an academic appointment as Assistant Professor of clinical medicine with the SUNY at Stony Brook Medical School.  She has had multiple responsibilities at Winthrop including being a member of the Quality of Care Committee, Associate Geriatric Fellowship Program Director and Director of the House Call Program.  Her areas of expertise include publications and presentations on preventive health in adults, successful aging, elder abuse, delirium, dementia and palliative medicine.

Dr. Maria Torroella Carney is board certified in Internal Medicine, Geriatric Medicine and Hospice/Palliative Medicine through the American Board of Internal Medicine and American Board of Hospice and Palliative Medicine.  In 2007, Dr. Carney served as medical editor and contributor of the book, Voices of Alzheimer’s, which received a starred review from The Library Journal.  It was recently named Best Consumer Health Book for 2007 by The Library Journal.

“After carefully reviewing all the applications for the Commissioner of Health, we are pleased to have Dr. Carney as Commissioner of Health,” said County Executive Suozzi.  “Dr. Carney has extensive experience in the medical profession and I know she will bring the same high level of dedication, commitment and professionalism to Nassau County.”

“I am very excited to bring my knowledge and experience in academic and clinical medicine to the public health system in order to promote the health, safety and well-being of our residents,” Said Dr. Carney.
