Suozzi Appoints Nassau County’s Director of Environmental Coordination

Mineola, N.Y-Nassau County Executive Thomas R. Suozzi today announced the appointment of Thomas Maher as the County's Director of Environmental Coordination. Thomas Maher had been Vice President, Principal in Charge of the Division of Environmental Remediation on the Board of Directors of Dvrika and Bartilucci Consulting Engineers.

"I am committed to protecting the health of Nassau's residents and preserving our environmental resources," said County Executive Suozzi. "We must develop a plan that will protect our environment for the generations that follow us and the Environmental Improvement Program is the first step towards reaching that goal."

As Vice President and Principal in Charge of the Division of Environmental Remediation at Dvirka and Bartilucci, Mr. Maher developed the Hazerdous Waste and Brownfield practices, accounting for one-third of the company's billings and directed over 70 Superfund projects in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut and Massachusetts. He was the director of two 7-year, $15 million Superfund contracts for the State of New York. He holds a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering Science from Hofstra University.

Mr. Maher's appointment as Director of Environmental Coordination is part of County Executive Suozzi's plan to implement an aggressive and comprehensive environmental program for Nassau County, which will include brownfields redevelopment, groundwater and drinking supply protection, open space preservation, waterways and wetlands protection, storm water management, traffic congestion and air quality improvement, energy conservation and environmental education. He will also monitor the establishment of the Environmental Coordination Committee, which will consist of representatives from each county department, including Health, Public Works, Recreation and Parks, Economic Development, and the Planning Commission.

"The residents of Nassau County are gaining a very qualified leader," said County Executive Suozzi. "Tom Maher will bring his years of experience in environmental protection to Nassau County and I am pleased to welcome him."
