Defendant Extradited from Canada to Nassau County
“America’s Most Wanted” Exposes Nassau Fugitive
MINEOLA, NY – Nassau County District Attorney Kathleen Rice announced today that Stanley Osbourne has arrived in Nassau County, after being extradited from Toronto, Canada, to face charges that he assaulted his wife with a handgun in August of 2001. Mr. Osbourne has been charged with Assault in the First Degree, a Class B Felony, and Assault in the Second Degree, a Class D Felony.
It is alleged that, on August 17, 2001, Mr. Osbourne lured his wife, Bonita Osbourne to Kings Point, New York, under the guise of going to see a marriage counselor. According to Mrs. Osbourne’s and a witness’ account, Mr. Osbourne attempted to cut his wife with a razor while in the car. Mrs. Osbourne fought back and struggled to get out of the car while Mr. Osbourne attempted to fire his weapon at her, but the gun misfired. Mr. Osbourne then allegedly struck his wife with the jammed pistol, causing a skull fracture and severe blood loss to the victim. Mr. Osbourne fled the crime scene and up until September of last year his whereabouts were unknown.
In January of 2002, a Nassau County grand jury indicted Mr. Osbourne on the assault charges, as well as misdemeanor menacing and weapons charges and a warrant was issued for his arrest.
America’s Most Wanted profiled Mr. Osbourne’s case on September 10 of last year. Multiple tips were called into the show claiming that Mr. Osbourne had made his way successfully across the Canadian border. He had obtained a job working for a construction company and lived in a basement apartment in the Toronto suburb of Brampton, Ontario. He was living under the assumed name of Leroy Haughton. The SWAT unit of the Brampton Regional Police at Peel apprehended Mr. Osbourne without incident at his residence in Brampton the morning of September 11, 2005. The Nassau County District Attorney’s Office forwarded a Provisional Arrest Warrant request to the Canadian authorities on September 14, 2005.
The District Attorney would like to thank the United States Marshal’s New York/New Jersey Regional Task Force, Andre LaBier, Commander, along with Deputy U.S. Marshal Roy Wright, Nassau County Police Department Detective George Freund, and Suffolk County Police Department Detective Joseph Thomas. The District Attorney would also like to thank America’s Most Wanted for their involvement in the eventual apprehension of Mr. Osbourne.
The defendant is expected to be arraigned Thursday morning on the charges and faces up to twenty-five years in prison if convicted on all counts. Assistant District Attorney Roxanne Paquette, the Nassau County District Attorney’s New York/New Jersey Fugitive Task Force Coordinator, is handling the case for the prosecution.
The charges are merely accusations, and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
