Freeport Man to Get 20 Years to Life for 2007 Murder
Maynor Murcia pleaded guilty to each of five counts against him
MINEOLA, NY – Nassau County District Attorney Kathleen Rice announced today that Maynor Murcia, 26, of Freeport, has pleaded guilty to Murder in the Second Degree and Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Second Degree in exchange for a promised sentence of 20 years to life in prison from Nassau County Court Judge William Donnino.
Murcia pleaded guilty to his role in the July 15, 2007 shooting death of Miguel Adames on a Freeport street corner shortly after midnight. Murcia admitted to shooting Adames in the head as Adames walked down the street. Murcia, and accused accomplice Jose Mendez, 16, then continued to shoot Adames in the back while he was on the ground. Both Murcia and Mendez are members of the gang MS-13.
“Let this be an example that those who choose to destroy lives and fracture families will face the consequences of their actions,” said Rice. “We were ready to take this case to trial when, at the last minute, the defendant chose to take responsibility for what he did.”
Mendez was also charged with Murder in the Second Degree and Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Second Degree. He is currently awaiting trial and due back in court May 6. Murcia will be officially sentenced June 2.
Assistant District Attorney Martin Meaney of the DA’s County Court Bureau is handling the case for the District Attorney’s Office. Murcia is being represented by Alfred Braverman.
The charges against Mendez are merely accusations and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
