Merrick Woman Found Guilty of Killing Husband

Kelly Forbes convicted of Manslaughter for strangling her husband with an electric cord

MINEOLA, NY – Nassau County District Attorney Kathleen Rice announced today that a jury has unanimously dismissed self-defense claims and convicted Kelly Forbes of manslaughter in the electrical cord strangling death of her husband last November.

A jury took less than four hours to find Forbes, 29, of Merrick, guilty of Manslaughter in the First Degree.  Forbes was arrested last November after the lifeless body of her husband, Michael Forbes, was found in the couple’s Merrick home.  Police officers recovered an extension cord at the scene and Kelly Forbes later told detectives that she used the cord to strangle her husband in self-defense.

“The jury saw through the defense’s case and held Mrs. Forbes accountable for her actions,” Rice said. “I only hope Mr. Forbes’s family takes some solace in knowing that Michael’s killer will be behind bars for a very long time.”

Forbes is scheduled to be sentenced by Nassau County Judge Jerald Carter on July 18.  She faces a maximum of 25 years in prison.

ADA Michael Canty of the DA’s County Court Bureau is handling the case for the District Attorney’s Office. Forbes is being represented by Anthony Capetola, Esq.
