‘Diamond Note’ Bank Robber Gets 7 to 21 Years in Prison for Two-Year Crime Spree

Miller pleaded guilty to 17 bank robberies he committed since October 2006

MINEOLA, NY – Nassau County District Attorney Kathleen Rice announced today that Michael Miller, a 41-year-old Levittown resident, has pleaded guilty to robbing 17 banks over a nearly two-year period and stealing more than $50,000. Miller was promised a sentence of 7 to 21 years in prison in exchange for his plea.

Miller pleaded guilty to 17 counts of Robbery in the Third Degree. He will be sentenced January 16, and pay $50,687 in restitution.

Rice said that on October 27, 2006, Miller entered the Franklin Square branch of Washington Mutual Bank and presented a note to the teller demanding money, which he received. Miller committed 16 more robberies in a similar fashion through May 2008 before being arrested June 3. Rice said that Miller’s hand-written notes contained diamond-shaped ‘O’s’ and ‘Q’s,’ leading to his nickname, while also allowing law enforcement to tie him to each robbery.

Miller robbed banks in Franklin Square, Bethpage, East Meadow, Great Neck, New Hyde Park, Oceanside, Albertson, Valley Stream, Westbury, and Garden City South during his crime spree.

“Mr. Miller, a one-man crime wave, will now suffer the consequences of his actions, thanks to a tireless investigation by the Nassau County Police Department,” Rice said. “His blatant disregard for the laws of our society and the safety of our communities has led Mr. Miller’s case to this inevitable conclusion. We were fully prepared to take Mr. Miller to trial before he took responsibility for his actions.”
