Commissioner

Dear Friend,

Welcome to the Nassau County Department of Public Works website!

The Department of Public Works is made up of over 800 hard-working, dedicated employees that work each day to maintain a high quality of standard of living for the 1.3 million residents of Nassau County. These employees share a wide range of responsibilities and, with the support of County Executive Thomas R. Suozzi and the Nassau County Legislature, they provide you with many essential services. For example, the Department oversees the maintenance and operation of the County's transportation infrastructure, including over 500 miles of roadway, approximately 1,600 traffic signals, 52 fixed bridges and 2 draw bridges. The Department is also responsible for preserving and protecting the County's environmental resources by operating two waste water treatment facilities, two groundwater remediation facilities and 37 pump stations as well as maintaining over 600 recharge basins, hundreds of groundwater monitoring wells and 200 miles of streams and drainage ditches. The Department also manages routine maintenance and major improvements at over 800 County owned buildings and facilities thought the County, including all of their associated systems (i.e., HVAC, plumbing, electrical, etc).

The above public works functions are provided to you with little fanfare, and in many cases, you are unaware that you are even benefiting from these services. As a long time Nassau County Public Works employee, myself, I have often noted the shame of our "behind the scenes" status. Therefore, one of my goals as Commissioner is to make as many people aware of the hard work and dedication of Public Works employees and the benefits that our residents realize as a result. I want each and every one of them to be proud of the teamwork that makes all of our lives better.

I hope to use this website as a way to highlight the responsibilities and accomplishments of the Department. I invite you to explore this website and find out for yourself just how much the Department of Public Works affects your daily activities. I trust you will find the information provided both informative and interesting.

Very truly yours,
Ray Ribeiro
