TEMPORARY ASSISTANCE - FOOD STAMPS
The food Stamp program helps low-income households by supplementing their monthly food budget.  Eligible households use an electronic benefit card and PIN (personal ID number) to access their benefits at the supermarket checkout counter, the same way a debit card is used.  There are many supermarkets throughout the county where you can use your benefit card.

How to Apply for Food Stamps

Nassau residents must submit an application to the Nassau County Department of Social Services.  Applicants who are over age 60 or disabled may mail in their applications which may be obtained by calling 227-8523.  Other households may come in during regular business hours.

Unless your household contains an individual who is age 60 or over, or who is permanently disabled, the total gross (before taxes) income of your household cannot be greater than the following amounts:

Expedited Food Stamp Benefits

Even if the food stamp office cannot do a complete eligibility interview for you on the same day you file your application you are entitled to a screening to see if you qualify for what is called "expedited" consideration. If your household has little or no money and needs help right away, you may qualify for "expedited" food stamps. If you do, you must receive your initial Food Stamp benefit within five days. You will still have to complete the eligibility process, and supply all the required documentation at a later date.
