Buses in Nassau County operate under a lease-operating agreement between Nassau County and the Metropolitan Transportation Authority.

Fares:
- The base fare for Long Island Bus is $2.00, payable with MetroCard or coins. Please consult a current schedule or call the Travel Information Center at (516) 228-4000 for additional details.
- A transfer can be purchased for $.25 when you board the bus and pay with coins. Transfers are free with MetroCard use. Transfers are valid for two hours from the time indicated on the transfer and may be used only at designated points and for routes traveling in the same general direction.
- MetroCard is the light, plastic card that allows you to pay your fare electronically on all Long Island Bus routes and New York City Transit buses and subways. You can choose between several kinds of MetroCard to pay your LI Bus fare -- Unlimited Rides, Pay-Per-Ride, and 1-Day Fun Pass.
- The Regular, or Pay-Per-Ride, MetroCard allows you to put as much money as you like on the card -- from $3 to $80. You can pay for 5 rides and get 6 when you buy a $10 MetroCard. You pay for 10 rides and get 12 when you buy a $20 MetroCard. You can transfer free from bus to subway, subway to bus, or bus to bus at designated connecting locations, if you transfer within two hours of the time you pay your fare.
- The $7 Fun Pass is good for one day of unlimited local bus and subway rides, from the first use until 3 am the next day.
- Unlimited Ride MetroCards for 7 days cost $21 and for 30 days cost $70. The cards are good until midnight, for either 7 or 30 days from the first day you use the card. All transfers are free.
- Once you use an Unlimited Ride MetroCard, you cannot use it again for 18 minutes except on approved connecting LI Bus and NYC Transit routes.
- Reduced-Fare MetroCards are available with application at half-price to senior citizens (over 60 for LI Bus; 65 for NYC Transit) and persons with qualifying disabilities. For further information and an application, call (718) 243-4999.
- Senior citizens age 60 or over and Medicare card holders pay half-fare at all times upon presentation of proper identification. A Reduced - Fare MetroCard is available to senior citizens and individuals with qualifying disabilities. For further information, call (718) 243-4999.
- Children under 44" tall ride free when accompanied by an adult. There is a limit of three children per adult.
- Students through grade 12 receive reduced fares with an LI Bus identification pass supplied through participating schools.
Where To Buy MetroCard
- Unlimited Ride and Pay-Per-Ride MetroCards may be purchased at LI Bus’s Hempstead Transit Center, any subway station, the MetroCard Express Van and more than 3,300 neighborhood stores. The Fun Pass is available at many neighborhood stores and the MetroCard Express Van.
