Limited Spraying For West Nile to Begin in Nassau County

Due to the increased numbers and types of mosquitoes found in the Woodbury area, Nassau County Departments of Health and Public Works have announced that limited spraying by truck with Scourge (resmethrin) will begin Friday, September 13th, between 8:00 p.m. - midnight.

Commissioner of Health, David M. Ackman, MD, MPH, said: "In light of the findings of large numbers of human-biting mosquitoes from trap sites where West Nile virus-infected mosquitoes have been found previously, we feel the risk to humans is sufficient to warrant the application of adulticide. This should also remind residents to continue to take personal protective measures."

Areas to be sprayed include:

  • Eastern boundary: Suffolk County line
  • Southern boundary: Northern State Parkway west to Route 135 (Seaford/Oyster Bay Expressway)
  • Western boundary: Route 135 North to Jericho Tpke. east on Jericho to include Pond Road, Fairhaven Blvd and Fox Hollow Road
  • Northern boundary: local streets below Stillwell Woods Park, east including Clearmeadow Lane, Clearmeadow Court, Hillcrest Lane, Uphill Lane and The Grasslands

The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) do not require relocating or taking special precautions during mosquito control spraying. However, people may prefer to avoid or minimize exposure by:
  • Staying indoors
  • Keeping windows shut, setting air conditioners to re-circulate and turning window fans off during spraying
  • Keeping children's toys indoors
  • Keeping pets indoors, as well as their food, water dishes and toys

Since the effects of the ground spraying dissipate in a few hours, it is not necessary to wash off outdoor furniture or playground equipment before use, although doing so will not diminish the effectiveness of the pesticide applied.
