Volunteers Sought for Evaluating Health Effects of 9/11
The Nassau County Department of Health is urging all Nassau County residents exposed to the World Trade Center (WTC) collapse to sign up with the WTC Health Registry by August 4th.
The WTC Health Registry hopes to enroll as many people as possible by August 4th who were in close proximity to the WTC on September 11, 2001, or who lived or worked near the WTC site* in the months that followed. They hope to track exposed individuals to determine the short and long term health effects, if any, in order to better understand the possible health consequences relative to 9/11.
Those eligible to enroll in the WTC Health Registry are:
- People who were in a building, on the street, or on the subway south of Chambers Street on 9/11/01.
- People involved in rescue, recovery, clean up or other activities at the WTC site and/or WTC Recovery Operations on Staten Island any time between 9/11/01 and 6/30/02.
- School children and staff enrolled in schools (preK-12) or daycare centers south of Canal Street on 9/11/01.
- People who were living south of Canal Street on 9/11/01
* The WTC site is bounded by Chambers Street, Broadway, Rector Street and the Hudson River.
Those who enroll will answer a 30-minute baseline telephone survey. Once enrolled, participants may be contacted every two years and asked to report the status of their health. There are no blood tests or medical exams required to enroll. All information is confidential. If you believe you may be eligible, call the toll-free number 1-866-NYC-WTCR (1-866-692-9827) or on the web at www.wtcregistry.org. by August 4, 2004.
