National Women and Girls HIV/AIDS Awareness Day Recognized
Once considered a disease of men, HIV/AIDS is a continuing and growing problem among women, particularly women of color. Heterosexual contact has steadily accounted for an increasing proportion of HIV infections among women.
- Between 1984 (when AIDS reporting began) and 2006, there have been over 6,183 people in Nassau County reported with AIDS; approximately 24% of whom were women.
- In Nassau County, it is presumed that there are 1,755 people currently living with AIDS. Women account for 540 or 31% of AIDS cases and over 40% of HIV cases.
- In 2006, there were 111 newly-diagnosed female AIDS cases; over 46% of whom were African American women in Nassau County.
- In Nassau County, the following (both male and female) are living with AIDS:
