New Vaccines Available For Older Children

Pertussis and Meningococcal Disease

Effective July 2005, a combination pertussis, tetanus and diphtheria vaccine became available for use in children aged 7 years and older. This vaccine (Tdap)) replaces the previously used tetanus diphtheria vaccine.

A newer meningococcal vaccine that provides longer lasting immunity is now available. It is recommended for children aged 11-12 years and also for entering high school students if they have not had the vaccine previously.

The table below lists the required vaccines for school entry. Although only 3 doses of polio, diphtheria, tetanus and pertussis are required, the recommended number of doses depends on the age of the student: 4 doses DTP by age 15-18 months, 5 doses by age 4-6 years and a booster at age 11-12 years and every 10 years thereafter, and 4 doses of polio vaccine by age 4-6 years.
