14th Confirmed Case of West Nile Virus in Nassau County
Total Cases in Nassau at 19
The Nassau County Department of Health is reporting an additional confirmed case of West Nile virus. This individual was previously considered a probable case. The total number of individuals with West Nile virus in 2008 in Nassau County is at 19; 14 of which are confirmed cases and five are probable cases. Of the 14 confirmed cases, there have been four deaths.
The newly confirmed case is a 58-year-old male from Valley Stream. He became ill on October 7th with fever, headache, neck pain and chills. He was hospitalized on October 9th where he remains. This case (the 18th in Nassau County) was initially identified as a probable on October 17th and was confirmed on October 28th.
A 53 year old female from Uniondale was identified as a probable case on October 22nd. She is the 19th case in Nassau County.
West Nile virus is spread by the bite of infected mosquitoes. Mosquitoes should no longer be active given the cooler evening temperatures.
