Beaches Closed

Due to heavy rainfall, the Nassau County Department of Health has closed the following 21 beaches as a precautionary measure, effective today, August 15th.   Due to anticipated heavy rainfall this evening, these beaches may be closed until Sunday, the 17th.

Storm water runoff can have a negative impact by elevating bacteria levels that are used to assess bathing water quality.   After the cessation of a major rain event, permitted beaches are usually closed as a precautionary measure for 24hours, or at least two turns of the tide, to wash away possible contaminants.  If there is no intermittent significant rainfall, beaches can then be reopened.
