Corbin and Williams Bring Minority Publications into Fold
Local Newspapers Made Eligible for County's
"Notice of Sale" of Tax Liens Advertisements

Deputy Presiding Officer Roger Corbin (D-Westbury), Legislator Patrick Williams (D-Uniondale), as well as the rest of the Democratic majority, adopted legislation on Monday, Dec. 11 that will bring small community publications in neighborhoods such as Hempstead and Uniondale greater participation in the County's required advertisement of "Notice of Sale" of tax liens.

According to Williams, by amending the Nassau County Administrative Code, the new legislation will expand the scope of advertisement of "Notice of Sale" of tax liens to publications that do not meet the myriad of requirements necessary to be considered a "newspaper," as defined by the New York General Construction Law.

"This legislation will bring valuable information into communities that have never before had local access to it," said Legislator Williams.

Deputy Presiding Officer Corbin stated that the legislation would also provide a lucrative source of revenue to local community newspapers, thus allowing them to grow in size and influence. "The publication of municipal "Notices," whether by a town, village, or county, is an important source of revenue for a newspaper of any size, hence, in the name of fairness and equality, we should make it available to everyone."

The modification in the code will allow publications otherwise excluded due to the definition of "newspaper" to be considered for required notice publication. However, the publication must have certain content, not be an advertising publication distributed or made available free of charge, and be printed and distributed for a period of no less than one year.
