At the Dec. 15, 2008 legislative session, Nassau County Legislator Roger Corbin (D-Westbury) was extremely proud to congratulate three Westbury students each of whom has an outstanding history of academic achievement. They are Justin A. Gonzalez and Renee Watson from Drexel Avenue Elementary School in Westbury who were nominated by Superintendent of Schools Dr. Constance Clark and Principal Dr. Wanda Toledo; and Westbury resident Brandon A. Perpall who currently attends Our Lady of Mercy Catholic School. The students are in the National Young Scholars Program which is designed for children with academic achievement and leadership potential. Little did the children know that their hard work and dedication would be rewarded by a trip to Washington, D.C. for the January 20, 2009 inauguration ceremonies for President-elect Barack Obama.

Legislator Corbin said, “I was made aware that these students had been nominated by their school administrators to participate in the National Young Scholars Program based in Albany. A search began for sponsors so that these wonderful students could attend the program. Stepping forward were Eric Bluestone and Ranjan Batheja of the Bluestone Organization and J. Christopher Daly with Donald Campbell from the Shelldrake Organization. The generosity and spirit of these benefactors have made a lasting impression on the children and I am truly grateful.”
