| August 4, 2005 Scannell/Suozzi Kick Off Rehabilitation of Silver
Lake Pond in Baldwin
Nassau County Legislator Joseph Scannell (D-Baldwin) and Nassau County Executive Thomas R. Suozzi today joined with fellow legislators to kick off the rehabilitation and aquatic enhancement of Silver Lake Pond in Baldwin. The rehabilitation project will restore this beautiful freshwater wetland and open water area that has deteriorated because of erosion and an influx of sediment from road sanding operations and erosion of the stream bank. The project will also improve the visual appearance in the pond area, remove and replace bulkheading, and refurbish certain areas. "This is a vitally important environmental project that will not only provide much needed rehabilitation of Silver Lake Pond, but will also improve water quality, restore the aquatic habitat as freshwater wetlands, prevent further erosion, and protect the integrity of the shoreline," said Legislator Scannell. In addition, Silver Lake Pond currently has approximately 3,000 cubic yards of sediment which will be removed, a new aeration system will be installed, new concrete pavement will be added, the bridge will be refurbished, and pedestrian pathways will be constructed. |
