Legislators Scannell and Denenberg Remember The Four Chaplains at Baldwin American Legion

Nassau County Legislators Joe Scannell (D-Baldwin) and Dave Denenberg paid tribute to the bravery and sacrifice of The Four Chaplains with the members of the Baldwin American Legion Post 246. All in the US Army during World War II, The Four Chaplains—Father John Washington (Catholic), Reverend Clark Poling (Dutch Reformed), Rabbi Alexander Goode (Jewish) and Rev. George Fox (Methodist) gave their lives to save other soldiers during the sinking of the troop ship USAT Dorchester on Feb. 3, 1943. They helped soldiers board lifeboats and gave up their own life jackets when the supply ran out. The chaplains then joined arms, said prayers, and sang hymns as they went down with the ship. The Four Chaplains were later honored by US Congress and Presidents and were recognized for their selfless acts of courage, compassion and faith.
