Biography:
Jeffrey Toback's successful run for the Nassau County Legislature in 1999 and subsequent re-elections in 2001, 2003 and 2005 have come as no surprise to those in his community who know his extensive record of community involvement. Currently serving his fourth term as Nassau County Legislator, he represents the 7th Legislative District, which includes Barnum Island, Bay Park, Cedarhurst, East Rockaway, Harbor Isle, Hewlett, Hewlett Bay Park, Hewlett Harbor, Hewlett Neck, Inwood, Island Park, Lawrence, Oceanside, South Valley Stream, Woodmere, and Woodsburgh
Legislator Toback, the Alternate Deputy Presiding Officer, is a self-described "Quality of Life Guy." His legislative votes include creating the Open Space Advisory Committee (OSPAC) and the Open Space law, pioneering legislation to preserve open space, recreational areas and other environmentally sensitive areas in the County.
In 2002, Toback also led the way with legislation banning smoking in all restaurants, bars and workplaces in the County to ensure that no one is expose to second hand smoke in the workplace. Legislator Toback has also proposed a law to raise the legal age to purchase tobacco products in Nassau County from 18 to 19. Called TOBACCO 19, the law would make it more difficult for younger teenagers to “pass” for the legal age, adding a substantial obstacle to their purchasing tobacco products.
Legislator Toback also co-sponsored a law to protect Nassau teens from the harmful effects of indoor tanning devices. Called the Colette Coyne Skin Cancer Prevention Law, the legislation requires anyone under the age of 18 who wishes to use a tanning facility to have signed, written consent from his or her parent.
Last year Legislator Toback also approved a “living wage” law that will increase wages for workers contracted by the county. Supporters of the law included many labor groups representing home health care workers, and the Long Island Progressive Coalition.
In 2006, Toback will be working on several pieces of legislation, including a local law that would ban the sale of toy guns in Nassau County. He will also continue to serve as a watchdog of taxpayers' interests as they relate to County contracts.
He serves as chairperson of the legislature's Judiciary and Health and Social Services committees; vice chair of the Rules Committee; and is a member of the Public Safety, Minority Affairs, Public Works and Planning, Development and the Environment committees. In addition, he will continue to conduct regular hearings before the health Committee on a wide variety of public health issues.
Toback understands that he is a representative of the people and in an effort to keep his constituents well informed on county issues, he regularly conducts community meetings throughout his district. A practicing, self-employed attorney, Legislator Toback is President of the Oceanside Rotary and is on the board of the Five Towns Community Chest.
An Oceanside native and resident, he and his wife, Arlene, have three children: Rebecca, Melissa and Danny.
