Toback and Fellow Lawmakers Approve Agreement with Hewlett Bay Fire District for Life-Saving Technology
Nassau County Legislator Jeff Toback (D-Oceanside) and fellow Majority lawmakers approved an inter-municipal agreement between to assist the Hewlett Bay Fire District with the purchase of a thermal-imaging system, a potentially life-saving technology.
“This moves us one step closer to making the Hewlett Bay Fire District an even more efficient and capable first responder,” Toback said. “With possession of a thermal-imaging system, firefighters will be able to scan buildings for people trapped inside and detect hazardous materials. This system will do no less than save lives.”
The cost of the system is estimated to be about $12,000. Funds are coming out of Toback’s 2006 Community Revitalization Projects budget.
The thermal-imaging system allows firefighters to search the premises from a safe distance while increasing the speed and accuracy with which a search is conducted. This reduces the number of firefighters needed to conduct searches, as well as the chance of injury or loss of life.
