Toback initiates project for safer walkway
Five-way intersection in Lawrence slated for redesign

Mineola, NY-Nassau County Alternate Deputy Presiding Officer Jeffrey Toback (D-Oceanside) announced today that a dangerous pedestrian walkway located at a five-way intersection in Lawrence, has been scheduled for a redesign by the County's Department of Public Works. Lawrence Deputy Mayor and Police Commissioner Simon Felder brought the hazardous situation to Toback's attention.

"I am pleased that I was able to move this much-needed project along," said Toback. "With dozens of pedestrians using this intersection everyday and an even higher level of usage on Saturdays, there is no time to waste in getting this redesign completed." Toback said.

"Mr. Toback himself came down to survey the intersection and we got action," said the Commissioner. "We have been trying to get something done for at least two years; Certainly since I became police commissioner, which was a year ago. He recognized immediately that something has to be done."

The design phase of the project has commenced and construction will begin in late summer, according to a Public Works spokesman. Safety upgrades to the crossing will include a flashing "Walk/Don't Walk" sign, painted crossway markings on the pavement and other safety features that will make pedestrians more visible to drivers.

"We've had many near misses with children in that intersection," Felder said. "With the electronic sign being installed it will become much safer."
