Toback & community leaders rally to close Oceanside Dump
Wednesday, June 4 at 11 a.m.

Close the dump, once and for all. That's what Nassau County Alternate Deputy Presiding Officer Jeffrey Toback (D-Oceanside) and community leaders are calling for following several weeks of revolting odors emanating from the landfill on Long Beach Road. At a rally today held outside the dump, Legislator Toback was joined by civic and community leaders, and other elected officials, as they all called for the dump to be permanently closed.

"What is being dumped at the Oceanside landfill?" Toback asks. "Is the Town of Hempstead abiding by its permit for the facility?"

The dump closed its gates over 20 years ago, but it is still used as a transfer station by the Town of Hempstead for yard waste only. But lately, residents have noticed an objectionable smell coming from the dump, described by some as "rotten eggs." While some residents say the smell may be attributed to decaying grass clippings and other landscaper debris, some residents wonder if there is other noxious material being dumped at the site.

"Oceanside and its residents have been dumped on long enough," said Toback, a life-long Oceanside resident. "It's time to close this dump down once and for all."

"It's time for Oceanside to get a break, " said Michael Mulhern, Oceanside resident and general manager of Oceanside Cove.

"No one has to give directions to the dump," said Toback. "You can just follow your nose."
